「教養孩童，使他走當行的道，就是到老他也不偏離。」
箴言教導要透過學習「訓誨」（מוּסָר）和「勸戒」（עֵצָה）才能得到智慧和知識。「訓誨」是指「紀律」和「管教」（箴一3，三11），「勸戒」則是「勸告」和「謀略」（箴八14；十二15），人要接受訓誨和勸戒，才能行在正確的道路上，正如「因為誡命是燈，法則〔律法〕是光，訓誨的責備是生命的道」（箴六23）。
人要明白，就必須經過學習，然後接受，並不是憑想像出來的，否則那只是人的「想法」。箴言的目的就是教導人不是按自己的想法行事，若要得到智慧，惟一的方法是「敬畏神」，若要敬畏神，自然要按神的方法去做，這必然要「學習」才能夠掌握。
單是「學習」當然是不足夠的，因為這並不代表人學習後就會遵行出來，於是要用「訓練」才能使人可以把學習出來的敬畏神方法，活在日常生活中。因此，箴言才有「教養孩童，使他走當行的道，就是到老他也不偏離。」（箴二十二6）
