我們相信神是慈愛，為何神要人經歷苦難？特別災禍受傷害的人多像是無辜的。可是亞當犯罪為何會影響歷世歷代的人？若是人犯罪得罪神，神用苦難來使人回轉，人可以同意。若人是敬虔，神用苦難作試驗（亞伯拉罕、約伯），人還可以接受。可是信徒要面對敵擋神的勢力而受盡折磨而死（但以理書），神卻忍心袖手旁觀，這卻令人難解的。有些更是死得不明不白了，交通意外受害的不是藥駕、醉駕的人，反而是無辜孝順的家庭支柱。更甚者，我們知道人有許多限制，我們如何得知面對的難處，是來自神，還是來自敵擋神的勢力？
希伯來聖經時間，苦難有兩方面，一方面是來自神的懲罰，如亞當夏娃得罪神後被逐出伊甸園，就要面對荊棘蒺藜的生活環境和生育的加增痛苦（創三16、19）。另一方面是人遵從神的吩咐所要面對的惡劣環境，如以色列人在曠野，先知服侍的對象，約伯面對的人生問題。
